FAQs About IPL Photofacial
How does an IPL Photo Facial work?
During an IPL Photo Facial, light is absorbed superficially into the skin. The treatment targets pigment-producing cells and problematic hemoglobin and destroys them, dispersing the pigmented, uneven areas on your skin. The pigmented spots are pulled to the surface of your skin, eventually disappearing, revealing a revitalized and even skin tone. In addition, the high-energy light helps stimulate your skin’s natural collagen production, creating a more youthful appearance.
Before the treatment begins, your medical provider applies a numbing cream to the treatment areas. A handheld device then produces light energy and is gently applied to the skin where the pulsed light is emitted. Since the light is bright, you are given a pair of metal protective glasses to wear during your treatment. After the treatment, the treated area is cleaned with a warm cloth and a light moisturizer and sunscreen are applied.
Is an IPL Photo Facial safe?
IPL Photo Facials are FDA-cleared, considered generally safe and do not produce any long-lasting side effects.
Is the IPL Photo Facial a laser treatment?
The IPL Photo Facial is not considered a laser treatment because it uses gentle pulses of light to reverse the signs of aging, not a laser.
How long does an appointment for an IPL Photo Facial take?
Typically, appointments for an IPL Photo Facial are quick, taking approximately 20 minutes to an hour depending on the areas you are treating.
Is this treatment painful?
During your appointment, you may experience a mild snapping sensation from the pulsing light. Some patients also report feeling the sensation of a sunburn in the area being treated for a few hours to a few days after the treatment.
What do I need to know before my Photo Facial treatment?
How many treatments will I need?
Dramatic results can be achieved in 2-3 treatments. However, very large or darker spots, heavily freckled areas, or excessively sun-damaged skin may require more treatments. Your IPL provider may also suggest follow-up appointments throughout the year to keep your results looking their best.
What should I expect after a Photo Facial Treatment?
At first, the treated areas may darken, and the surrounding skin might be a little red which should subside in a couple of hours post-treatment. The darkened spots will fade and flake off in one to three weeks after treatment, giving way to a clearer complexion.
After your treatment, you can go back to normal activities. However, your skin may be sensitive to the sun, so we recommend avoiding exposure and wearing sunblock whenever you are outside (which is always a good idea) following the treatment.
When will I see the results?
Most clients see a significant improvement in their skin in two to three weeks following the treatment, with the skin gradually improving over time. The final result may take several months to achieve. You can look forward to your skin being smoother, brighter and more even toned.
How long does the IPL Photo Facial treatment last?
One of the reasons clients love the IPL Photo Facial is that results are permanent! However, it’s important to know that your skin is always susceptible to sun damage, so continue using protective measures when outdoors.
How do I know if I am a candidate?
If you are dealing with skin pigmentation caused by aging, sun exposure or broken capillaries, the IPL Photo Facial may be an effective solution for you. Patients that are tan or those with melasma (a condition where brown patches appear on the skin) may not be a good candidate. We recommend starting with an initial complimentary consultation to meet with an expert IPL provider. During this appointment we’ll review your medical history, talk about your concerns and discuss what type of results you can expect from the IPL Photo Facial treatment or a combination of other medspa services.
