Dermaplaning NYC

Conveniently located to serve New York City, Tribeca, and The Upper East Side

Dermaplaning was once an aesthetic trade secret in the modeling industry but has since become one of the most popular skincare treatments on the market. Excellent on its own or combined with hydrating facials, chemical peels or rejuvenating laser treatments, dermaplaning gently removes the outermost layer of dead skin cells on the face. A highly trained Medical Aesthetician or Physician’s Assistant will manually exfoliate the treatment area using a 10-gauge scalpel. Vellus hair, also referred to as peach fuzz, is also removed during the treatment. The immediate result is fresh, bright skin revealed and a smoother look and feel. In addition, removing dead skin cells and vellus hair creates a smooth foundation for cosmetic application and skincare products will better penetrate the skin.

This treatment is recommended for all skin types with the exception of those who suffer from acne. This treatment is safe and effective for pregnant or nursing women.

FAQ

How does Dermaplaning work?

Your skin is exposed to harsh elements on a daily basis, from environmental toxins and irritants to sun damage, which in turn can make skin appear dull and aged. Dermaplaning is a non-invasive, exfoliating treatment that manually removes dead skin cells and vellus hair on the face. Before the treatment, your provider will use a gentle cleanser on your skin to remove any oil, bacteria and dirt. By holding the skin taut, a sterile 10-gauge blade is stroked across the skin at a 45-degree angle. This removes the top layer of damaged skin so newer skin under the surface is revealed. After this process, your skin will be gently wiped down with a warm towel to remove any dirt and peach fuzz.

Can Dermaplaning cause acne?

Quite the opposite! Dermaplaning does not cause acne. This exfoliating treatment can actually help improve it! Dead skin cells can lead to clogged pores and hair follicles which can result in acne, pimples and whiteheads. Removing the top layer of your skin will also allow for acne medication (if applicable) to penetrate deeper and increase its effectiveness. However, Dermaplaning cannot be performed on skin with active acne.

Does Dermaplaning hurt?

Dermaplaning is a completely painless treatment! Although it involves the use of a scalpel, an incision is never made; the scalpel delicately glides just above the outermost layer of skin, removing any hair and dead skin cells in its path.

Is Dermaplaning safe?

This treatment is extremely safe when performed by an experienced Medical Aesthetician or Physician’s Assistant. It is non-invasive comparable to a man shaving his face. Dermaplaning is also safe for pregnant and nursing women.

Will the vellus hair grow back thicker?

No. It is physiologically impossible for vellus hair, also known as peach-fuzz, to grow back thicker or darker. Vellus hair, when cut or removed, will grow back the same, as the structure of the hair is not damaged.

What should I know before the treatment?

If you are experiencing an acne flair up before the treatment, you may need to wait until it subsides. We also recommend avoiding sun exposure for two weeks before the appointment.

What should I know after the treatment?

After the treatment, you can go about your day as usual! There is zero downtime after a dermaplaning treatment. You may experience mild redness after the treatment, but this will quickly improve. In addition, it is best to avoid exfoliation, retinoids 2-3 days after treatment.

As always, it is important to wear broad-spectrum SPF. After Dermaplaning, we advise that you do not use exfoliators or scrubs for one week.

How long do results from Dermaplaning last?

The results of Dermaplaning are immediate! You’ll notice your skin is brighter, smoother and rejuvenated. Your individual results will vary depending on your rate of skin cell turnover but typically results last between three to four weeks.

Can Dermaplaning be performed with laser treatments or chemical peels?

Absolutely, the combination is often recommended to achieve maximum results. When combined with other treatments, dermaplaning can enhance their effectiveness.

How often should you Dermaplane?

We recommend Dermaplaning monthly; exfoliation is important for maintaining a healthy skincare regimen. Dermaplaning removes twenty-one days’ worth of dead skin cells. It is best to allow the skin to complete its rejuvenation cycle before your next Dermaplaning treatment.

How do I know if I am a candidate?

Dermaplaning is an extremely safe procedure that can be used on most skin types. If your skincare concerns include fine lines, sun damage, dryness and dullness, Dermaplaning may be an effective skincare treatment for you.

It may not be recommended for those who are prone to or have existing acne as the scalpel may further irritate your skin.

During a complimentary dermaplaning consultation, you will meet with our expert Medical Staff where we will go over your medical history, talk about your concerns and let you know what type of results you can expect from dermaplaning treatment.
